IGF-1也称促生长因子C，属于胰岛素基因家族，与胰岛素前体蛋白在结构上类似，具有更好的促生长作用，能促进多数细胞的分裂、迁移和分化。Human LR3 IGF-I（Human Long-R3-IGF-I，人长R3胰岛素样生长因子）是一个含有83个氨基酸的人IGF-1的类似物。与完整的人IGF-1相比，在N端增加了13个氨基酸残基，尤为重要的是第3位氨基酸残基由天然的Glu替换为Arg（因此称为R3）。与人天然的IGF-1相比， LR3 IGF-1大大降低了与人IGF-1结合蛋白的结合能力，游离浓度更高，因而显著提高了生物学活性。 在多数体外试验中，LR3 IGF-1在浓度为0.2-20 ng/ml的范围内就能很好发挥生物学活性。
